Can’t Fake a Fragrance

Reaction vs. Response

In our human nature, we are wired to **react**. This is a quick, often instinctual action—like hitting the brakes when a car swerves in front of you. But in our relationships and our faith, this same pattern of reaction can either build up or tear down those around us.

A **response**, however, comes from a deeper place. It's a conscious choice that demonstrates a surrendered life. It's not about what we do instantly, but about how we live intentionally.

The Fragrance of Christ

Paul writes about Christians being the "fragrance of Christ" to the world. This is not something we can fake with a quick change of actions. It's an aroma that rises from a life that has been broken and poured out for God.

Like Mary who anointed Jesus's feet with expensive perfume, her act was not a reaction to a need, but a response of love. The fragrance filled the entire house, representing a love that filled her entire being.

"For we are not, as so many, peddling the word of God; but as of sincerity, but as from God, we speak in the sight of God in Christ."

Head and Not the Tail

Deuteronomy 28:13 promises that the Lord will make us "the head and not the tail." This isn't just about earthly success; it's a spiritual position. It's about being a leader, not a follower, in our faith.

When our lives are surrendered to God, we are positioned to lead and influence from a place of authority, not from a place of human striving. The fragrance we carry shows the world what a victorious, "above-and-not-beneath" life looks like.

A Life Remembered

Just as Jesus promised that Mary's extravagant act would be remembered, a life lived with authentic fragrance will also be remembered by Christ. It is a life that loved much, poured out much, and walked in triumph.

A true fragrant life is a surrendered life—one that confesses Christ before others and is, in turn, confessed by Him before the angels of God. It's a life that leaves a lasting aroma of His presence.
