Ephesians | In Submission
Paul moves from the general command of "walking in wisdom" to the intimate application of our homes. He presents a Great Mystery: Marriage is not just a social contract; it is the visible display of what it means to be IN CHRIST.
1. The Foundation: Mutual Submission
Before Paul addresses husbands or wives individually, he lays the cornerstone. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of a healthy marriage. We submit our rights, our preferences, and our pride because we are first submitted to Christ.
2. The Husband: Source & Sacrifice
Headship is redefined here. It is not tyranny.
- Headship as Source: In Greek, "kephale" implies the source (like the head of a river). The husband is to be a source of life, provision, and spiritual water.
- Headship as Savior: This isn't about saving a soul, but about being a "deliverer" and protector—sacrificing one's own desires for the good of the bride.
3. The Wife: Holy Response
Wives are called to submit "as to the Lord." This is not a statement of inferiority, but of function. It is a voluntary alignment under leadership, mirroring how the Church responds to being In Christ.
