Ephesians | Equipped for Opposition
THE REAL BATTLEFIELD
It’s easy to point fingers at the evil in the world "out there." But Paul warns us that if we aren't careful, the evils of the world—which we have no control over—can become a distraction from the battle right in front of us.
We don't need a detailed organizational chart of hell to understand our enemy. We need to understand his purpose.
1. The Nature of the Battle
Paul describes our struggle as a "wrestle." You don't wrestle someone across a battlefield; you wrestle someone who is close enough to grab.
Spiritual warfare is not introduced as a battle for territory; it is introduced as a battle for intimacy and unity. It fights against the things that are close to you, personal to you, and important to you.
"Spiritual Warfare is not introduced as battle against what is out there… it is introduced as battle for what is right in front of you."
2. The Enemy's Strategy: "Move"
Christ has already won the victory. He is far above all principality and power. Therefore, we are not conquering demonic territory; we are standing in the victory He already secured.
God calls you to STAND. Satan wants to MOVE you.
- Move you off Truth.
- Move you off Identity.
- Move you off Love.
- Move you off Unity.
3. The Targets of Attack
Why is marriage so hard? Why is parenting so difficult? Why is work so draining? Paul connects spiritual warfare directly to the relationships he discussed in Ephesians 5 and 6. The enemy targets these specific areas because:
- Marriages: To ruin the picture of Christ and the Church.
- Families: To destroy the next generation.
- Workplace: To destroy our testimony in the world.
- The Church: To stop us from displaying God’s manifold wisdom.
Your spouse isn’t your enemy.
Your teenager isn’t your enemy.
There is something deeper moving.
"Don’t be surprised by opposition… be equipped for it!"
